THE LOWDOWN

SOONWOO KWON

World number 54 Soonwoo Kwon overcame future star Holger Rune in five sets on Monday to reach the second round of the Australian Open for the first time in his career. The South Korean won his maiden ATP title late last season at the Astana Open after a sudden resurgence in form and he looks set to enjoy an even better year in 2022.

DENIS SHAPOVALOV

World number 14 Denis Shapovalov overcame Laslo Djere in four sets on Monday. The 22-year-old won the ATP Cup with Canada at the start of the year after taking some warming up but his form so far in 2022 suggests this could be a huge season for the Canadian. Shapovalov reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon last year before losing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.

THE PREDICTION

Soonwoo Kwon is exactly the kind of industrious player that disrupt Denis Shapovalov’s game to no end if he does not find a better level than his first round win over Laslo Djere. The Canadian’s 13 aces and 82% win rate on his high-risk serving is about his working level for wins but four breaks by Djere is too many to take into the next few rounds here in Melbourne. Kwon has already won a five-set match and his fitness will not be called into question come Wednesday. Shapovalov is one of the most unpredictable players on tour and with this match capable of falling in commanding straight sets or in five after four hours’ play, take the Canadian to win outright here and cautiously too.
