THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Karolina Pliskova takes on former number three Sloane Stephens for a blockbuster round of 16 clash in Rouen, with Stephens commanding a surprisingly one-sided head-to-head record of 5-1. 30-year-old Stephens, currently ranked 39th, has won each of their last three encounters, including back-to-back on clay at Roland-Garros in 2021 and last spring, but Pliskova’s only victory came on clay in Madrid back in 2018.

32-year-old Pliskova needed three sets to oust Polina Kudermetova on Monday but she should be better for an early scare and she only recently claimed a title at this level, winning the Transylvania Open two months ago to snap a trophy drought of four years. Stephens came back from a set down to beat Peyton Stearns on Monday, an altogether more difficult result, to suggest she is the favourite here but backing the erratic American is always a risk. Take Stephens to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
