THE PREDICTION
World number 10 Caroline Garcia overcame a potential scare on Wednesday to beat Rebecca Marino from a set down but she should be the better for it ahead of this likely thriller. The Frenchwoman burst into form this summer to win the Bad Homburg Open on grass and then complete the surfaces set by taking the Poland Open on clay and a third Masters title at the Cincinnati Open back in August. Former world number three Sloane Stephens is even more unpredictable than Garcia, capable of beating anybody as much as being shocked by anybody, but she has so far excelled in Guadalajara with straight-set victories over Linda Fruhvirtova and Belinda Bencic. The American won the seventh WTA title of her career here earlier this season in the WTA 250 event and Guadalajara so far looks a happy hunting ground, which should strike fear in the rest of the draw. Garcia leads Stephens 4-1 in their head-to-head record, though, with three victories on the spin including a three-set thriller at last season’s Cincinnati Open. Back the sixth seed to win at least a set here and leave the victor up to chance, with practically any outcome possible.
