THE PREDICTION

It is surprising to find that this is the first ever tour meeting between former world number three Sloane Stephens and former world number 11 Alize Cornet but it promises to be a thriller. 29-year-old Stephens played well at the Canada Masters to beat Sofia Kenin in three sets before losing to Maria Sakkari in the same fashion and she will back herself in this likely chaotic occasion with four of her seven WTA titles coming on US soil, including the 2017 US Open and a Masters title from Miami in 2018. 34-year-old Cornet is coming off a tight three-set defeat to Bianca Andreescu in Toronto but a three-set victory over Caroline Garcia before that is top 30, if not top 20 form, right now. The Frenchwoman is one of only handful of players to beat Iga Swiatek this season and she has displayed the more dependable form across the first two thirds of 2022 but this match is a real head-scratcher. Back Cornet to win at least a set from a match likely to need a decider and leave the winner up to chance.
