THE PREDICTION

30-year-old Simona Halep is yet to drop a set this week as she continues to steamroller most lower-ranked players she faces. The world number 23 won the Dubai Tennis Championships back in 2020, which was her most recent WTA title until last month when she won her 23rd at Melbourne Summer Set 1. World number 10 Ons Jabeur conceded just four games to in-form Jessica Pegula on Wednesday in her first tournament back since an unfortunate injury caused her to miss the Australian Open. The Tunisian could well break her career-high WTA world ranking of seventh early this year if she can find anything near the level she ended last season in.

Halep and Jabeur met in the second round of this very tournament two years ago, where the eventual champion was top seed and came back from a set down to win. This match-up should come closer still but at this moment in time it is probably still Halep’s to lose with both players still trying to get back up to their top speeds. Take the former world number one to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners.
