THE PREDICTION

World number 15 Simona Halep overcame Shuai Zhang in an assured straight-sets performance on Wednesday that, tentatively, looks like the Romanian could be a dark horse contender for the title here in Montreal. The former world number one counts six Masters titles amongst her 23 WTA titles, including two from the Canada Masters in Montreal from 2016 band 2018, although she was a finalist in Toronto back in 2015 when an injury saw her concede the third set to Belinda Bencic. 24-year-old Jil Teichmann has also impressed this week with two straight-set victories over Venus Williams and the second seed, Anett Kontaveit. Teichmann has moved inside the top 20 in the live WTA rankings but she will have to reach the final this Sunday to maintain that as a large portion of her points won from her run to the Cincinnati Open final last season will drop away. The Swiss looked a plucky runner this time last year in Cincinnati, away from her favoured clay, but she has proven since that she can surprise players on this surface.

Halep should be coming through this first meeting with Teichmann but the suitably cautious move for an accumulator would be taking the Romanian to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
