THE LOWDOWN

SIMONA HALEP

Former world number one Simona Halep overcame a strong test in Ekaterina Alexandrova over three sets on Friday. The 30-year-old won her opening tournament of the season at Melbourne 1, with runs to the round of 16 at the Australian Open and the semi-finals of the Dubai Tennis Championships all steps in the right direction back to the top 10 for the current world number 26. Two-time Grand Slam champion Halep owns six Masters titles amongst her total of 23 career titles, including Indian Wells in 2015.

COCO GAUFF

18th seed Coco Gauff got her Indian Wells campaign underway smoothly with a straight-sets victory over Claire Liu. The teenager turns 18 years old today and faces a former world number one for the second time as a present, with eventual champion Halep the woman who ended the 15-year-old’s fairy-tale run at Wimbledon in 2019 in the round of 16. Gauff has since won two WTA titles and set a higher Grand Slam benchmark after reaching the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last summer.

THE PREDICTION

This blockbuster of a third round match should draw vast crowds at Indian Wells as former champion Simona Halep takes on a future champion Coco Gauff for the second time. Halep beat a then 15-year-old Gauff in straight sets at Wimbledon in 2019 in the round of 16 on her way to her second Grand Slam title but world number 17 Gauff is still improving all the time. It is difficult to predict how the occasion will affect the teenager, 18 today, but the crowd will be largely in her favour against a popular player like Halep and this could go to three. The sensible move is to take Halep to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners here but the history in this match-up makes taking Gauff to win at least one a tempting alternative.
