World number 36 Shuai Zhang should be considered a creditable title contender at the Palermo Ladies Open this week after strong results at WTA 250 level throughout the season. The 33-year-old claimed her third WTA title at the Lyon Open earlier this season and more recently reached the Birmingham Classic final before injury saw her forced to retire from both that and the Women’s Doubles. World number 61 Jasmine Paolini is a hard grafter and there are likely to be some long rallies between two comfortable baseliners here but the Italian has been in below-par form for much of this season. Both players won their openers in straight sets but Shuai Zhang leads this head-to-head record 2-0 at tour level and taking the Chinese to win outright seems reasonable.
