World number 12 Coco Gauff passes a significant test in this hugely promising US Open campaign by beating former finalist Madison Keys in straight sets. The 18-year-old reached her first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros back in June, finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek, and since then she has lost to two more eventual champions in five tournaments. Gauff was world number one in doubles at the Cincinnati Open, form that is clearly helping her singles game, but an early exit this fortnight gives her more rest and recovery time as a genuine title contender here. Beating Madison Keys in comfortable straight sets is a huge statement of intent by Coco Gauff, who looked one of the title contenders coming into New York even before her excellent start. The 18-year-old will face a totally different challenge against uber-consistent brick wall Shuai Zhang here, who has enjoyed some of the form of her career in 2022 at 33 years old. The Chinese star often frustrates foes into unforced errors but Gauff’s mental strength at 18 is more than most find in a lifetime. The American will be backed to the hilt by an adoring crowd craving a homegrown miracle like Emma Raducanu last season, although it would not be a miracle in Gauff’s case but the first step in a clear future at the top of the sport.
