THE PREDICTION
29-year-old Shelby Rogers recently reached the semi-finals of the Libema Open in grass but she has since suffered early exits in Birmingham and Eastbourne. The American is the last player on tour to have beaten the now retired Ash Barty with a stunning performance in the third round at the US Open last September before she lost to eventual champion Emma Raducanu. Rogers has twice reached the quarter-finals at a major tournament, Roland-Garros in 2016 and the US Open back in 2020, but she yet to get past the third round at Wimbledon.
This should be an entertaining match with Petra Martic and one of the tighter first round clashes if their previous encounters are anything to go by. The pair claimed a win apiece last season, Rogers in two at the Australian Open and Martic in three on her way to the Italian Open semi-finals, but Martic has enjoyed the better results at Wimbledon with two round of 16 exits in 2017 and 2019. The Croat is riding a four-match losing streak but she is well capable of finding some strong tennis from nowhere and this feels like exactly the kind of match Rogers can slip up in. Leave this one out of an accumulator but consider taking it to see a decider as a one-off.
