THE PREDICTION
Serbia were handed a very significant boost to their chances of making the Davis Cup Finals as world number one Novak Djokovic confirmed that he will play the last two ties of the week here in Valencia. That leaves in-form world number 37 Laslo Djere to play first option on Tuesday, fresh from his impressive run to the third round of the US Open where he took the only two sets from Djokovic’s 24th Grand Slam title-winning campaign with a fabulous 2-0 start in a five-set defeat. Djere recently finished runner-up to Alexander Zverev at the Hamburg 500 on his favoured clay but he has looked in great shape since transitioning onto hardcourts. World number 48 Miomir Kecmanovic has endured a really weird season to bring a 20-24 record into the Group Stages despite finishing runner-up at two events this year. The 24-year-old will be eager to perform here, though, before Djokovic comes into bump him down to third option and he has improved considerably on hardcourts in recent seasons.
World number 112 Soonwoo Kwon is far better than his current deflated ranking suggests but the 25-year-old is playing only his third match since February after suffering an injury at the Qatar Open. Kwon had started 2023 off on fire with a brilliant run to his second career ATP title at Adelaide 2 but he is some way off from the level that saw him beat three top 40 players, including seasoned pro Roberto Bautista Agut in the final. World number 194 Seongchan Hong and number 316 Yun Seong Chung may take it in turns to play as second option this week depending on their performances in training but South Korea look set for a very tough week in Valencia, with a total 0-9 whitewash a distinct possibility.
Miomir Kecmanovic should blast through his opening match against South Korea’s second option, although there is a chance that Dusan Lajovic comes in to do a similar job depending on Serbia captain Viktor Troicki’s choices. That leaves this tie hanging on Laslo Djere versus Soonwoo Kwon, which would certainly be an enticing watch if the South Korean were fully up to speed. Kwon played a Challenger last week to get some more practice in his legs ahead of the Davis Cup Group Stages but he suffered an early hammering that suggests this tie is already over. Back Serbia to win 3-0.
