Former world number four Dominic Thiem reached the semi-finals of the Gstaad Open last week, backing up a solid run to the quarter-finals of the Bastad Open, with a series of hugely promising results after coming back from 14 months of injury-induced absence. The 28-year-old has plenty of time on his side to regain his rightful place inside the world’s top 10 and he should be a force to be reckoned with across the North American hardcourt swing later this season. His best surface remains clay, though, and a home tournament in Kitzbuhel means a lot to the popular Austrian. He faces compatriot Sebastian Ofner for a second time here having beaten the world number 235 in straight sets at this exact stage three years ago – their only previous meeting. Ofner came back from a set down to stun Richard Gasquet on Tuesday but it would be a huge surprise to see anything other than another Thiem win in two here.
