THE PREDICTION
World number 19 Karen Khachanov enjoyed his moment in the sun here back in 2018 with an incredible victory over Novak Djokovic in the Paris Masters final. The 26-year-old has not won a title since but after several seasons slowly drifting away from the top 20 he re-joined it with style this summer with a run to the semi-finals of the US Open. Since then, Khachanov has lost to three in-form players in Astana, Antwerp and Vienna to suggest he has the upper-hand in this first meeting with world number 40 Sebastian Baez, who has not transitioned back to hardcourts well in the latter half of this season. 21-year-old Baez has lost seven of his last eight matches on hardcourts and nine of his last 10 matches since finishing runner-up to Francisco Cerundolo at the Bastad Open on clay in July. Back Khachanov to come through in straight sets here and watch with interest how the former champion takes to this week’s campaign.
