THE LOWDOWN
SAM QUERREY
34-year-old Sam Querrey rolled back the years on Friday with an excellent comeback victory over in-form Tallon Griekspoor. The current world number 115 had not won a singles match since shocking Pablo Carreno Busta in the first round of Wimbledon in late June of last year to snap an unwelcome nine-match losing streak. Querrey has 10 ATP titles to his name, with two 500 events won at Queen’s Club in 2010 and the Mexican Open in 2017.
JOHN ISNER
World number 23 John Isner set a career-high ATP world ranking of eighth back in 2018 where he won the only Masters event amongst his 16 career titles at the Miami Open. The 36-year-old is selective with his tour calendar these days but he still managed to win the Atlanta Open last season for a record-extending sixth time. Isner will play a blockbuster doubles match later on Sunday alongside Jack Sock against Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a real celebration on Sunday at Indian Wells in the 10th meeting between two greats of the American game over the past generation. With 26 titles between them, John Isner and Sam Querrey have been the hard-hitting thorns in the sides of many a top four player at Grand Slams over the years and their head-to-head record is finely poised at 5-4 to Querrey. 34-year-old Querrey had the better of their earlier meetings, winning four of their first five matches including two finals at the Memphis Open and Belgrade Open in 2010, whilst Isner has won three of their last four including last season’s first round clash at Roland-Garros. Evergreen Isner should be able to level things neatly at 5-5 here but a suitable alternative to the result would be to take at least a tiebreak in this match and for Isner to win at least a set, leaving the winner between two veterans up to chance.
