THE PREDICTION

World number two Carlos Alcaraz has not played since his three-set exit to Grigor Dimitrov at the Shanghai Masters three weeks ago, with some concerning fitness issues to ponder as he gears up for the ATP Finals. The 20-year-old stunned Novak Djokovic in a five-setter for the ages to lift the Wimbledon title in July, his second Grand Slam trophy after winning in New York last season, but he has struggled (by his lofty standards) to match that intensity since, barring another thriller in defeat to Djokovic in the Cincinnati Masters final in August. 26-year-old Roman Safiullin could set a career-high ATP world ranking of 40th after coming through qualifying as the top seed before a straight-sets victory over Alexandre Muller. The Russian finished runner-up to Alexander Zverev at the Chengdu Open late last month and he beat the German in an immediate rematch at the Shanghai Masters to prove his growing ability on tour.

There is certainly scope for a shock three-setter here as Alcaraz may take some time getting used to the conditions in Paris-Bercy after some time away but it is likelier that the cauldron atmosphere provides a home-from-home partisan backing that can inspire the Spaniard to a straight sets win.

BETTING TIP: Carlos Alcaraz to win 2-0.
