THE PREDICTION

Former world number 12 Borna Coric will be elated with his performance on Wednesday after beating the returning Rafael Nadal in three sets, taking a 3-2 lead in his head-to-head record with the Spaniard. The 25-year-old is on the long road to recovery himself after missing a year of the tour through surgery and he will consider this a real milestone in his attempts to break back into the top 20 and beyond. World number 19 Roberto Bautista Agut beat Marcos Giron in straight sets for an altogether more comfortable day on court and he reached this stage of the Canada Masters last week before a tight defeat to Casper Ruud. It is hard to know how well Coric can compete here after such an effort against Nadal but his confidence will be sky-high and that is a powerful force in itself for 34-year-old RBA to counter.

The Spaniard leads Coric 4-3 in their head-to-head record but they have not faced each-other since 2019, where both were at their peak. Coric leads 2-1 on hardcourts and his exploits against Nadal should see him snatch at least a set here. The sensible option remains backing Bautista Agut to win at least a set but with three sets likely perhaps that is the shrewd move here.
