THE LOWDOWN
RAFAEL NADAL
35-year-old Rafael Nadal has won all 15 of his matches so far this season to win the Melbourne 1 warm-up event, last month’s Mexican Open and a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. The world number four has already beaten new world number one Daniil Medvedev twice this season, including in the final of the Australian Open that will go down as a modern classic. Nadal can equal Novak Djokovic’s Masters 1000 record of 37 title if he goes all the way this fortnight.
SEBASTIAN KORDA
21-year-old Sebastian Korda is back up to his career-high ATP world ranking of 38th and he will break that by at least one place no mater the outcome of this match. The 21-year-old beat Thanasi Kokkinakis in straight sets on Thursday for a first win at Indian Wells but he has some way to go to emulate his best Masters showing after a superb run to the quarter-finals of last season’s Miami Open.
THE PREDICTION
This will be a hugely beneficial experience for 21-year-old Sebastian Korda even if it likely ends up a straight-sets defeat to the impeccable Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard won in three comprehensive sets in their first meeting in the round of 16 of Roland-Garros back in 2020 but Korda should have a little more joy on a hard court. There are still some areas of the American’s game that need work, not least his speed around the court, and that is something that Nadal should be able to exploit early and throughout to come through in straight sets.
