THE LOWDOWN

RAFAEL NADAL

World number four Rafael Nadal started the 2022 season of fin some of the form of his life, winning his first tournament of the season at Melbourne 1 in his comeback from foot surgery and never looking back. The 35-year-old claimed the Men’s Singles Grand Slam record with a 21st major title won at the Australian Open and he took that form through to a further title at the Mexican Open before eventually coming unstuck on a 20-match winning streak in the Indian Wells final. Nadal lost to Taylor Fritz in straight sets in California after suffering a rib injury in an incredible three-set victory over Carlos Alcaraz.

MIOMIR KECMANOVIC

22-year-old Miomir Kecmanovic will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 30th after beating Alexander Bublik in straight sets on Tuesday. The Serb already owns a 23-9 win/loss record for what is set to be by far his best season on tour with only Stefanos Tsitsipas, Carlos Alcaraz and Andrey Rublev winning more matches in 2022. Kecmanovic won his only ATP title to date in clay at the Kitzbuhel Open in 2020.

THE PREDICTION

It will be interesting to see how good Rafael Nadal can start in this seriously tough opening Madrid Open fixture against in-form Miomir Kecmanovic. Nadal will be welcomed like the five-time champion he is here in Madrid and he will enjoy a partisan crowd throughout his campaign. Typically the Spaniard starts tournaments with superb intensity but it remains to be seen how much the rib injury has hampered him over the last few weeks. Nadal beat Kecmanovic in straight sets at the Mexican Open in 2020 but this should come a lot closer if the Serb brings the level he has beaten the likes of Matteo Berrettini and Felix Auger-Aliassime with. Kecmanovic took Alcaraz to three sets at the Miami Open last month and he is playing well enough right now to cause some serious threat here. Take Nadal to win outright but it would not be a surprise to see Kecmanovic snatch this.
