THE PREDICTION

World number five Ons Jabeur comes into the Canada Masters a clear title contender after recently finishing runner-up to Elena Rybakina at Wimbledon, although the Tunisian is probably at her best away from the hardcourts. The 27-year-old’s main goal, aside of course from winning a Grand Slam, is becoming the first Arab to qualify for the year-end finals and had there been ranking points at Wimbledon this season she would be well on her way as a world number two. Jabeur is coming from a tough three-set defeat to Veronika Kudermetova at the Silicon Valley Classic last week and this is a tough opener against world number 51 Qinwen Zheng, who is steadily rising up the rankings this season. The 19-year-old is a rising Chinese star with plenty of promise and she came back well from a set down to beat home hopeful Rebecca Marino in three tight sets on Tuesday. A first meeting with Ons Jabeur should be one of the most entertaining matches of the round and with three sets just-about likelier than two the suitably cautious move here looks to be backing the Tunisian to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners.
