THE LOWDOWN

QINWEN ZHENG

World number 15 Qinwen Zheng dug deep to beat fellow Chinese Yafan Wang 10-8 in the deciding tiebreak on Saturday. The 21-year-old is one win away from emulating her brilliant run to the quarter-finals at the US Open last summer, where she stunned fifth seed Ons Jabeur before defeat to eventual runner-up Aryna Sabalenka. Zheng won her first two WTA titles either side of the US Open in Palermo and Zhengzhou before ending 2023 as runner-up to Beatriz Haddad-Maia at the WTA Elite Trophy.

OCEANE DODIN

World number 95 Oceane Dodin is yet to drop a set at the Australian Open after an assured victory over compatriot Clara Burel on Saturday. The 27-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 46th in 2017 after claiming her only WTA title in Quebec the year before but she had never progressed past the second round at a major until this dream run.

THE PREDICTION

Oceane Dodin has ghosted through the first week of the Australian Open with a series of impressive wins, most notably stunning Lin Zhu, who reached the round of 16 here last season, in the first round. This looks a step too far against Chinese rising star Qinwen Zheng but Dodin has earned plenty of caution here after protecting her serve very well all week. Zheng has been in the wars so far in Melbourne but she will be backed well as an engaging young talent aiming to emulate her hero Li Na. Back Zheng to win outright, although straight sets should do it.

TIP: QINWEN ZHENG TO WIN
