THE LOWDOWN

QINWEN ZHENG

World number 108 Qinwen Zheng was in impressive form in her Grand Slam debut on Monday, taking out in-form Aliaksandra Sasnovich in three tight sets via a deciding tiebreak. The 19-year-old came through the qualifiers well after an excellent run to the semi-finals of Melbourne 1 at the start of the year before losing to eventual champion Simona Halep.

MARIA SAKKARI

World number six Maria Sakkari got her Australian Open campaign underway with a straight-sets win over Tatjana Maria. The 26-year-old reached the semi-finals of two Grand Slams last season in defeats to both eventual champions in Barbora Krejcikova at Roland-Garros and Emma Raducanu at the US Open. Sakkari became the first Greek to qualify for the WTA Finals last season.

THE PREDICTION

Qinwen Zheng is the latest Chinese prospect producing big performances on tour, with her defeat of Ana Konjuh two weeks ago and Aliaksandra Sasnovich standing out. The 19-year-old will likely be overpowered by one of the strongest players on tour here but she has performed well enough to suggest taking Sakkari as the outright winner is a wise move, especially inside an accumulator. We are still looking for vintage Sakkari this season but if she finds it she can take this in two.
