THE LOWDOWN

World number 16 Jelena Ostapenko won her maiden WTA title at a Grand Slam with a stunning campaign at Roland-Garros in 2017 at barely 20 years old. The 25-year-old has struggled to maintain her intense best level consistently over the years but she has found some more reliable form over the past 12 months or so to win her fourth and fifth titles at last season’s Eastbourne International and this year’s Dubai Tennis Championships. Ostapenko has yet to reach the second week of both hardcourt Grand Slams.

19-year-old Qinwen Zheng may well be seeded in January at the Australian Open where she came to the fore this season with a huge performance in the first round. Since then the Chinese has looked a proper rising star, with her best effort yet taking a set from eventual champion Iga Swiatek in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros, and she comes into New York at a career-high WTA world ranking of 40th.

THE PREDICTION

Qinwen Zheng reached the quarter-finals of the Canada Masters earlier this month via huge results over Ons Jabeur and Bianca Andreescu and she could go far this fortnight if she can cause an initial upset. Jelena Ostapenko is not currently at the peak of her 2022 powers but a Women’s Doubles title at the Cincinnati Open last weekend will surely help her come in finely tuned. The Latvian should be the eventual winner of this tight and likely thriller but taking Qinwen Zheng to win at least a set looks a shrewd move.
