THE LOWDOWN

25-year-old Aryna Sabalenka will become world number one next Monday, after Iga Swiatek’s shock exit, and she played like it on Monday to concede just four games to Daria Kasatkina. The Belarussian is yet to drop a set at the US Open but after ghosting through week one the pressure will be on a little more now, particularly as she will be desperate to claim the top spot in her perceived ‘right way’ by winning the title. Sabalenka won her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in January and she has reached at least the semi-finals in each of her last four majors, including each of the last two in New York.

World number 23 Qinwen Zheng grabbed the biggest ranking win of her career over an out-of-sorts number five Ons Jabeur on Monday, conceding just six games to last season’s runner-up. The 20-year-old is through to the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time, surpassing her round of 16 exit to Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros last summer, and she can break her career-high WTA world ranking of 19th if she provides a huge upset here.

THE PREDICTION

Incoming world number one Aryna Sabalenka was sad to see Iga Swiatek beaten in the round of 16 of the US Open as she was gunning for a showdown for the top of the sport in the US Open final on Saturday. It is that mentality that has brought the 25-year-old to the peak of her powers after a woeful 2022 saw her serve more double faults than aces for most of the year, with her victory in Melbourne back in January a long time coming. Qinwen Zheng has enjoyed one of the best, most consistent rises up the sport in recent memory after bursting onto the scene at the start of last season but this looks too steep a climb at her current level. The Chinese number one has plenty of weapons but also plenty of weaknesses that can be targeted by the best on tour and facing Sabalenka for the first time is a hugely daunting prospect in these conditions. Take Sabalenka to win in straight sets.
