THE PREDICTION
World number one Iga Swiatek conceded just three games against Spain in two matches on Tuesday, blasting past Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-2 6-1 before partnering perfectly with Hubert Hurkacz to hand their opponents a double bagel. The 22-year-old is riding a 13-match winning streak into the United Cup quarter-finals after ending 2023 in incredible form, adding her 16th and 17th WTA titles at the Beijing Masters and WTA Finals. This should be her toughest match of the week in Perth against in-form Qinwen Zheng, who stunned world number seven Marketa Vondrousova in China’s 3-0 victory over group favourites Czechia on Saturday, but she will be confident of doing her part in this quarter-final with a 4-0 lead in their head-to-head.
21-year-old Zheng has rarely been put away easily by Swiatek, though, and the Chinese rising star should bring her best challenge yet at a career-high WTA world ranking of 15th. Three of their four encounters have seen sets go both ways, including most recently at the Cincinnati Open, but Swiatek’s current level makes a straight-sets pick a reasonable call all the same.
TIP: IGA SWIATEK TO WIN 2-0
