THE PREDICTION

Lausanne Open second seed Belinda Bencic overcame fellow Swiss Susan Bandecchi in straight sets on Thursday, backing up a comeback win over Diane Parry. The 25-year-old looks to have recovered from an injury that saw her lose out to Ons Jabeur in the Berlin Open final on grass last month but she claimed the sixth WTA title of her career back in April at the Charleston Open – a first on clay. This time last season Bencic won two Gold Medals at the Tokyo Olympic Games and if that tournament had ranking points she would be well inside the top 10 on tour. Former world number 15 Petra Martic is currently an anomaly in form at world number 85 and she too would be a lot higher had Wimbledon not seen its ranking points stripped. The 31-year-old reached the round of 16 at SW19 before defeat to eventual champion Elena Rybakina and she is perhaps even better on this surface.

This is a really tough call as Bencic leads their head-to-head 2-1 overall but Martic claimed their only meeting on clay at the aforementioned Charleston Open back in 2019. The Croat has a great chance at edging through here but home advantage should give Bencic an extra edge in Lausanne. Take the second seed to win at least a set here in a match that could well go to three, or Martic to win at least a set for a slightly riskier move.
