THE PREDICTION

World number 11 Petra Kvitova won the Miami Open back in March to prove herself a threat to any draw on tour still but the Czech’s strong weeks have become few and far between these days. A near-perfect week in Berlin back in June saw the 33-year-old lift her 31st WTA title from an illustrious career, including two Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014, and she reached the round of 16 at SW19 last month before defeat to eventual runner-up Ons Jabeur. World number 70 Cristina Bucsa has enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season on tour and she only recently grabbed the biggest ranking win of her career with a three-set comeback over Belinda Bencic in Cincinnati last week. The Spaniard retired from her semi-final at the Chicago Challenger on Friday but it was likely more of a precaution, or outright excuse, to prepare for this huge opener. Kvitova should be coming through in straight sets here but Bucsa has surprised a few top players this season to make the outright call the sensible option.
