THE PREDICTION

World number four Paula Badosa received a bye to the round of 16 at the Tokyo Open but she may well have preferred the run-up of playing a first round match after struggling in recent months. The 24-year-old has failed to win back-to-back matches on tour since defeat to eventual champion Daria Kasatkina in the semi-finals of the Silicon Valley Classic, where a brilliant victory over Coco Gauff proved what she is capable of when on song. This looks a seriously tough opener, though, against 19-year-old riding star Qinwen Zheng after the Chinese knocked out home hopeful Misaki Doi on Monday. Qinwen set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 36th this week after runs to the quarter-finals of the Canada Masters and the third round of the US Open and she will be well-backed by the home crowd as a youngster making big waves for Asian tennis. Back the Chinese to win at least a set here as the just-about likelier victor.
