THE LOWDOWN
PAULA BADOSA
Defending Indian Wells champion Paula Badosa beat Sara Sorribes Tormo in straight sets on Monday to take her streak in the desert up to nine. The 24-year-old beat two-time former champion Victoria Azarenka in the final last October in form that helped her qualify for the WTA Finals for a first time. One of 2021’s most-improved players, Badosa won the third title of her career at the start of the season at the Sydney Tennis Classic.
LEYLAH FERNANDEZ
19-year-old Leylah Fernandez set a career-high WTA world ranking of 19th early last month and she can break that with one more round reached at Indian Wells. The Canadian beat Shelby Rogers in a three-set showdown, her speciality, on Monday night to make it seven wins on the spin following the defence of her Monterrey open title last time out.
THE PREDICTION
Two winning streaks collide here, Paula Badosa’s 10-match Indian Wells-specific run versus Leylah Fernandez’s current seven-match form in what should be a thrilling first tour-level meeting. Badosa had struggled for a few tournaments since a round of 16 exit at the Australian Open in January but the confidence that returning to the scene of her best campaign yet is clear to see and she looks the slight favourite here in conditions that suit her best. That is not to say that Fernandez is exactly an underdog, with her best conditions so far looking to be any prestigious tournament under the floodlights. The Canadian beat Naomi Osaka, Angelique Kerber, Elina Svitolina and Aryna Sabalenka at the US Open last season at a level that would overcome Badosa too but backing the Spaniard to take at least a set as the more reliable performer seems wisest here. You could also consider opting for this match to see three sets.
