THE LOWDOWN

PAULA BADOSA

24-year-old Paula Badosa can set a new career-high WTA world ranking of second with one more win at the Miami Open after she ended 16-year-old Linda Fruhvirtova’s stunning run in straight sets. The Spaniard is yet to drop a set this campaign as she continues excellent form that took her to the semi-finals of Indian Wells two weeks ago before losing to Maria Sakkari. Badosa won last season’s Indian Wells title and started this season off with a third overall WTA title won at the Sydney Tennis Classic.

JESSICA PEGULA

28-year-old Jessica Pegula will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 13th if she reaches the semi-finals of the Miami Open. The current world number 21 was in control of her match against Anhelina Kalinina before the Ukrainian retired at the close of the first set and she too is yet to drop a set this campaign in Miami. Pegula won her only WTA title to date at the 2019 Washington Open.

THE PREDICTION

This promises to be a thrilling first meeting between Paula Badosa and Jessica Pegula, two of the hardier battlers on the WTA tour right now. World number six Badosa has the Masters pedigree behind her with a title won at Indian Wells in its delayed spot last October and the semi-finals reached just two weeks ago but Jessica Pegula has reached successive quarter-finals at the Australian Open over the last two seasons and she will be well-backed here as the American underdog. There are always more questions than answers the first time two players meet, so backing Badosa to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners seems the sensible option.
