THE LOWDOWN

ONS JABEUR

World number five Ons Jabeur came back from a set down to beat a tough foe in Shelby Rogers on Friday to reach the round of 16 at the US Open for a first time. The 27-year-old has now reached the second week at all four majors, with her stand-out run coming back in July where she took the first set as the favourite against Elena Rybakina before the Kazakh fought back to win. Jabeur’s three WTA titles have come on grass and clay courts so far but she reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open in 2020 to prove her ability in these conditions.

VERONIKA KUDERMETOVA

25-year-old Veronika Kudermetova could set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 12th after reaching the round of 16 at the US Open without yet dropping a set. The Russian had never won a match at Flushing Meadows before this campaign but she is now one win away from emulating her best Grand Slam run after reaching the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros back in June. Kudermetova has finished runner-up in tour finals on three occasions this season: to Simona Halep at Melbourne 1, to Jelena Ostapenko at the Dubai Tennis Championships and to Anastasia Potapova at the Istanbul Open.

THE PREDICTION

This looks a seriously tough draw for both players, although surprisingly more so for Ons Jabeur as Veronika Kudermetova leads their head-to-head 3-0. The Russian beat Jabeur in straight sets at the Silicon Valley Classic almost exactly a month ago, claiming her first two wins in 2019, to suggest she is the favourite here and yet despite all the evidence Jabeur still feels like the player capable of handling this big occasion best. Still, the Tunisian is yet to win a set from Kudermetova so backing het to earn her first one here looks the sensible compromise.
