THE PREDICTION
World number nine Ons Jabeur returned to some sort of form at the Madrid Open, where she was champion in 2022, with eye-catching wins over Leylah Fernandez and Jelena Ostapenko before Madison Keys came back from a set down in their quarter-final. The 29-year-old will be relieved to have finally won back-to-back matches for the first time this season, and for the first time since picking up her fifth WTA title at the Ningbo Open in September, but it remains to be seen how she fares in Rome after a first round exit to Paula Badosa at this stage last season.
Former number four Sofia Kenin grabbed an excellent opener over home hopeful Lucia Bronzetti on Wednesday, apparently using her frustrations with the weather and umpiring to fuel a fierce display. The 25-year-old snapped an eight-match losing streak in doing so but she has failed to win back-to-back matches anywhere since making the semi-finals of the Guadalajara Masters in September to suggest this is still Jabeur’s to lose.
Jabeur finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek here in Rome two years ago but two early exits either side of that run make this a tougher call than it should be, as does Kenin’s surprising 4-1 lead in their head-to-head. The Tunisian overcame Kenin for the first time in their most recent match, three years ago at Miami, and if she can find her level from Madrid last time out she can be backed to edge this likely thriller too.
