THE PREDICTION
World number two Ons Jabeur battled through a tight first set with Sorana Cirstea before rattling through the second in an encouraging start to her 2023 season. The 28-year-old will be one of many title contenders at the Australian Open later this month as she targets a first Grand Slam title after finishing runner-up at the previous two: to Elena Rybakina at Wimbledon and Iga Swiatek at the US Open. World number 69 Marta Kostyuk has started her season in impressive fashion, battling back from a set down to beat the aforementioned Rybakina in the round of 16 here for perhaps the biggest win of her promising career. The 20-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 49th last February after an impressive turn at the Australian Open but she faltered for much of the rest of the season – understandably so given the tragedy in her native Ukraine. 2023 could be a huge season for Kostyuk, who has been touted as a future star for several years now, but this should be too steep a climb for now against Jabeur. Back the Tunisian to win outright in this first meeting, with three sets a distinct possibility.
