THE LOWDOWN

World number two Ons Jabeur came back from a set down to beat Jessica Pegula on Wednesday, keeping her hopes of reaching the last four alive. The Tunisian took a set in her opening defeat to Aryna Sabalenka to give her an edge in the race for the final semi-final spot from this group, with Maria Sakkari sailing through already. 28-year-old Jabeur became the first African to qualify for the WTA Finals after an incredible career-best season on tour in which she won a first Masters title at the Madrid Open and finished runner-up at two Grand Slams – Wimbledon and the US Open.

World number five Maria Sakkari has played out an odd season of peaks and troughs, her peaks coming in two runners-up finishes at Indian Wells and more recently the Guadalajara Masters either side of a summer full of poor results. The 27-year-old found form at just the right time, it seems, to blast into the WTA Finals at Fort Worth and straight into the last four after back-to-back straight-set results over Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka. Sakkari still owns just one WTA title from the Rabat Open in 2019, with five losses on the spin in WTA tour finals after four lost this season.

THE PREDICTION

This should be a thrilling battle between Maria Sakkari’s in-form power-hitting and Ons Jabeur’s trickery on a court with a low bounce that suits the Tunisian to a tee. Both of their tour-level matches have gone to three sets after Jabeur beat Sakkari in the quarter-finals of the Italian Open on clay this spring but Sakkari took their hardcourt meeting at the Ostrava Open back in 2020. With the pressure off the Greek to reach the last four it will be interesting to see if she steps off the gas but Jabeur knows a win will see her through, so back the world number two to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners.
