THE PREDICTION

Former number 40 Pedro Martinez has enjoyed a strong start to 2024, moving back up to world number 51 after finishing runner-up to Hubert Hurkacz at the Estoril Open. The 27-year-old is an excellent clay specialist who won his maiden ATP title at the Chile Open in 2022 but he has failed to win a match on or off the tour since the disappointment in Portugal. World number 53 Nuno Borges knows all about disappointment in his native country after a controversial call in his quarter-final exit to Cristian Garin soured an impressive run. Borges, also 27, enjoyed a career-best run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open in January and he claimed the quality Phoenix Challenger title in March to maintain a brilliant record on hardcourts this season, with a run to the last eight at the Cagliari Challenger last week showing improvements on clay. The more effective clay-courter is Martinez in this first encounter between the two but the Spaniard will have to shake off his recent fugue to progress. Back Martinez to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
