THE LOWDOWN

NUNO BORGES

26-year-old Nuno Borges came back from a set down to stun in-form Grigor Dimitrov on Saturday, snapping the Bulgarian’s seven-match winning streak to reach the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time. The Portuguese will break inside the top 50 on tour for the first time for his efforts so far in Melbourne, building on the momentum from winning his home Challenger event in Portugal late last season.

DANIIL MEDVEDEV

World number three Daniil Medvedev came back from two sets down to beat Emil Ruusuvuori at 3:40am on Thursday but he bounced back admirably with a straight-sets result over Felix Auger-Aliassime to reach the round of 16 unscathed. The 27-year-old has finished runner-up here twice before, to Novak Djokovic in 2021 and Rafael Nadal in that five-set epic a year later, but he won his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2021 – spoiling Djokovic’s calendar slam in the process.

THE PREDICTION

World number 69 Nuno Borges is one of many surprising last 16 entrants in this madcap Australian Open draw but this looks a considerable step too far against two-time former finalist Daniil Medvedev. Borges has enjoyed plenty of cheap points behind his potent serve so far this fortnight, posting 46 aces with an above average first serve win percentage, but Medvedev’s trademark deep return position should limit what the Portuguese can do in this first meeting between the two. Medvedev should realistically be coming through this clash in straight sets but Borges has more than earned the right to some caution here. Back the Russian to win outright.

TIP: DANIIL MEDVEDEV TO WIN
