THE PREDICTION

This could be a proper thriller on Friday night if Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti’s first meeting in Paris is anything to by. A then 19-year-old Musetti took the first two sets from Djokovic in the3 round of 16 at last summer’s Roland-Garros before capitulating and retiring in the fifth, with Djokovic going on to win his 19th Grand Slam title there. The Italian was a different player for the best part of a year after that match, which seemed to knock every ounce of confidence from him, but he rediscovered himself late this summer to stun Carlos Alcaraz in the Hamburg Open final and he has not looked back since. A first hardcourt title won at the Napoli Cup last month is a huge marker for his improvement away from his favoured clay but he would probably trade this season for a chance at revenge here.

World number seven Novak Djokovic is riding the longest streak on the ATP tour right now after an 18th-straight victory on Thursday saw off Karen Khachanov. The Serb has not dropped a set on tour since the Wimbledon final, where he beat Nick Kyrgios from a set down, but he has lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Laver Cup during that span. This must-watch match could go the distance with Musetti likely to leave everything on the court but Djokovic could still, reasonably, be backed to take this in two.
