THE LOWDOWN

NICK KYRGIOS

27-year-old Nick Kyrgios put in perhaps the best performance of his career to beat world number one Daniil Medvedev in four incredible sets on Sunday. The Aussie should break back inside the top 20 for the first time since early 2020 after reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open for a first time but he should already have broken his career-high of 13th after finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the ranking points-less Wimbledon back in July. Kyrgios recently won the seventh ATP title of his career at the Citi Open, the same tournament he won his sixth in 2019.

KAREN KHACHANOV

World number 31 Karen Khachanov put in one of the best performances of his last few seasons on tour to beat Pablo Carreno Busta, recent Canada Masters champion, in five gruelling sets. The 26-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of eighth after winning the Paris Masters in 2018 but he has struggled to find those heights ever since despite fairly regular runs at Grand Slams. Khachanov is through to the quarter-finals of the US Open for a first time, emulating his runs at Roland-Garros in 2019 and Wimbledon last season.

THE PREDICTION

This could be a proper thriller on Tuesday between Karen Khachanov and Nick Kyrgios if the Russian brings the kind of tennis that outlasted Pablo Carreno Busta. Khachanov will struggle to break Kyrgios’ serve but his uber-consistent baseline-hogging tennis is the kind that could frustrate the Aussie if there is a hangover from his huge efforts to oust Daniil Medvedev on Sunday. All that is plain to see in their current head-to-head record of a win apiece, both occasions going the distance in a three-set win for Kyrgios at the Cincinnati Open in 2019 and a five-set epic going Khachanov’s way at the Australian Open a year later. The pair have seen six tiebreaks out of eight sets of tennis played, so back Kyrgios to win outright and at least a tiebreak in the match, perhaps even two.
