THE LOWDOWN

NAOMI OSAKA

Former world number one Naomi Osaka fought back tears of joy after coming back from a set down to beat Belinda Bencic on Thursday and reach a first WTA tour final since winning last season’s Australian Open. Four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka owns two Masters titles from Indian Wells in 2018 and the Beijing Open a year later. The 24-year-old has more than halved her current WTA world ranking of 77th and she can rise as high as 30th if she wins on Saturday.

IGA SWIATEK

Incoming world number one Iga Swiatek is through to her third-successive Masters final after a straight-sets victory over Jessica Pegula on Thursday. The 20-year-old is riding a 16-match winning streak into Saturday’s final after winning her second and third Masters titles at the Qatar Open and Indian Wells, with her victory over Pegula an eighth straight-setter in a row. Swiatek burst onto the world stage with some similar ruthless form taking her to the Roland-Garros title in 2020 as a teenager.

THE PREDICTION

Naomi Osaka’s place is in prestigious finals like this and the Japanese star looks set for a fast-track back to the top 10 of the WTA world rankings this summer based on her current form. The 24-year-old fighting back tears of joy was a welcome sight for tennis but on the other side of the court 20-year-old Iga Swiatek is winning copious fans with her ruthless, blistering playstyle. The Pole has not dropped a set in eight matches now, including the Indian Wells final where she conceded just five games to Maria Sakkari, and right now it feels like the only thing that could stop her is an injury.

Osaka beat Swiatek in straight sets in their only previous meeting at the 2019 Canadian Masters but the Pole was a teenage qualifier then and a world number one now. Back Swiatek to win outright here, although if there was a split option to take Swiatek in straight sets or Osaka in three that would be the call here.
