THE PREDICTION

World number six Coco Gauff came back from a set down to claim her sixth win on the spin on Monday, overcoming a tactically astute Laura Siegemund who seemed hellbent on frustrating the American into submission. 19-year-old Gauff has enjoyed a transformative August with successive most-prestigious titles won at the Washington Open and then Cincinnati Masters taking her career WTA titles total to five and she has never come into New York with more stock as a title contender. This is no gimme, though, against a rising star and clear future contemporary in 16-year-old Mirra Andreeva, who took the first set from Gauff before a meltdown in their third round clash at Roland-Garros in June. The Russian will break the top 60 on tour for the first time after avoiding an early scare against qualifier Olivia Gadecki, coming back from a set down, but she has struggle din recent weeks to fail to in back-to-back matches in each of her last two tournaments since that huge run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon.

Andreeva should be treated with the utmost respect here as a player full of raw talent, plenty of tennis IQ and no baggage. Take Gauff to win outright with the backing of a partisan atmosphere there to lift her up if things get tight.
