MIRRA ANDREEVA – First Grand Slam quarter-final at 17 years old
17-year-old Mirra Andreeva continues to blow the tour away with her insatiable, fuss-free game. The Russian will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 30th after reaching the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in only her second appearance – bettering her remarkable debut run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon last summer.
Andreeva beat Varvara Gracheva in straight sets on Monday to maintain an excellent campaign so far, dropping just one set in a late-night epic win over former number one Victoria Azarenka in the second round.
ARYNA SABALENKA – Two-time Australian Open champion, aiming for a seventh successive major semi-final
World number two Aryna Sabalenka made short work of Emma Navarro in straight sets on Monday, backing-up a spotless run to a seventh-successive quarter-final at this level. The 26-year-old has notably, and remarkably, never lost a Grand Slam quarter-final, winning each of her eight so far including over Elina Svitolina this time last summer.
Sabalenka finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek at each of the Masters events in Madrid and Rome to bring strong clay form into Paris but this remains her weakest of three very strong surfaces.
MIRRA ANDREEVA VS ARYNA SABALENKA PREDICTION
Mirra Andreeva’s incredible rise up the rankings continues apace but she has met, and lost to, Aryna Sabalenka twice on milestones so far. The Russian first burst onto the scene with a remarkable run to the round of 16 at the Madrid Masters last spring but she made it one round further last month, in her relentless pursuit of improvements on tour, before a similarly one-sided defeat to the Belarussian.
Sabalenka’s quarter-final record is exceptional but she could struggle to play the villain of this piece, on neutral ground, after developing a relationship with the Roland-Garros crowd over this campaign. Three sets are certainly possible, with Andreeva suggesting she may try a new tactic in this third encounter, but straight sets is a reasonable risk at this stage of their match-up.
MIRRA ANDREEVA VS ARYNA SABALENKA TIP: ARYNA SABALENKA TO WIN 2-0
