THE LOWDOWN
MIOMIR KECMANOVIC
22-year-old Miomir Kecmanovic looks to be building something special in Melbourne after a straight-sets victory over in-form Tommy Paul on Wednesday. The world number 77 has been performing well below his ability for a few years now but having his draw opened up by Novak Djokovic’s deportation, and the motivation to avenge his compatriot from it, is proving to be a heady tonic.
LORENZO SONEGO
World number 26 Lorenzo Sonego dropped the first set to his US Open vanquisher Oscar Otte but he came back well to win through in four. The 26-year-old is through to the third round of the Australian Open for the first time in his career, with two round of 16 exits at Roland-Garros in 2020 and Wimbledon last year his best efforts so far.
THE PREDICTION
Sonego won his first ATP title with a three-set victory over Kecmanovic at the Antalya Open back in 2019 but the Serb’s performances so far suggest he could return the favour here. The 22-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of 38th last year before falling away again but he should be pressuring the top 30 by now with the talent he has displayed in the past. Sonego is a fighter well capable of taking this in four or five and that makes picking either player to win feel a bit of a toss-up. Take both players to win at least a set and leave the winner up to chance.
