THE PREDICTION

World number 36 Miomir Kecmanovic is enjoying his best, most consistent year on tout to date with a 30-18 record coming into the US Open. The 22-year-old especially impressed back in March at the Sunshine Double with back-to-back quarter-final exits to eventual champions Taylor Fritz at Indian Wells and Carlos Alcaraz in Miami. Kecmanovic beat in-form Pablo Carreno Busta at the Cincinnati Open two weeks ago but there is some doubt about his fitness here in New York after he retired from his last match against Jannik Sinner. The Serb will have to cope with playing the villain of the piece here against 16-year-old wildcard Learner Tien, who won the USTA Boys’ 18s National Championship earlier this month. The American will be well-backed by a likely large crowd as a serious underdog and it would not be a total surprise to see him snatch the first set riding the high on his tour debut. The sensible option remains backing Kecmanovic to win in three, though.
