The 38-year-old will call time on his long and illustrious career once he loses here in New York but the farewell ceremony was played out on Tuesday to take the pressure off a little in this wide open clash between two Americans. World number 89 Michael Mmoh made full use of a rusty opponent to beat 11th seed Karen Khachanov in straight sets, backing-up excellent opening wins over Alexander Zverev and Felix Auger-Aliassime in his Australian Open and Wimbledon openers, respectively. The 25-year-old can break the top 80 on tour for the first time with victory here and he stands an excellent chance against Isner’s rapidly depreciating intensity. This first meeting between the two looks a strong candidate for five sets with Isner desperately clinging on to his career but take the match to see at least a tiebreak to leave the result wholly up to chance.
