Both world number 25 Tallon Griekspoor and number 47 Max Purcell come into this first encounter at career-high ATP world rankings. 25-year-old Purcell broke the top 50 for the first time this week after an incredible couple of weeks in Toronto and Cincinnati, beating the likes of Felix Auger-Aliassime and Casper Ruud before a three-set defeat to world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals in Cincy. Griekspoor, 27, has earned his first two ATP titles this season in Pune and ‘s-Hertogenbosch but his best run came in a runners-up finish to Dan Evans at the Washington 500 earlier this month, stunning top seed Taylor Fritz en-route. Expect a rugged, roughshod match here between two intense battlers. Very recent form suggests Purcell is the favourite but back Griekspoor to earn at least a set on the basis of a more consistent year overall or consider a one off on three sets here.
