THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Marketa Vondrousova came into the US Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of ninth after recently ghosting through the field at Wimbledon to lift her maiden Grand Slam title. The Czech conceded just three games to qualifier Na-lae Han on Tuesday in a very kind opener but this should be more of a challenge against former number 18 Martina Trevisan, who came back from a bagel to stun Yulia Putintseva in two fierce tiebreaks. The 29-year-old is by far at her best on clay, on which she reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last summer, but she has grabbed a few eye-catching results on hardcourts this year to provide the slightest spark off trepidation here. Two left-handers should favour Vondrousova as the more comfortable court-coverer in these conditions and she has given us little reason to doubt she can come through in straight sets here.
