THE LOWDOWN

MARTA KOSTYUK

19-year-old Marta Kostyuk is yet to drop a set at the Australian Open after two competitive wins over Diane Parry and the 32nd seed Sara Sorribes Tormo. The former world number 50 should smash that career-high this season after a steady 2021 season that saw a first second week reached at a Grand Slam in a round of 16 exit at Roland-Garros to former champion Iga Swiatek. Kostyuk beat another former champion in the first round there, Garbine Muguruza.

PAULA BADOSA

World number six Paula Badosa has handed a bagel to both of her opponents so far at the Australian Open, conceding just seven games in total in two assured victories over Ajla Tomljanovic and Martina Trevisan. The 23-year-old won her first WTA title just last summer but a rapid improvement saw her win a first Masters title at Indian Wells last October and then reach the semi-finals of the WTA Finals on her debut. Badosa claimed her third title just last week with a three-set victory over Barbora Krejcikova at the Sydney Tennis Classic.

THE PREDICTION

Paula Badosa is one of the red-hot favourites to win the Australian Open, with a three-set victory over world number four Barbora Krejcikova last week in Sydney a pretty good dress rehearsal. The eighth seed takes a seven-match winning streak into the third round to face a player she has talked up as a future star in 19-year-old Marta Kostyuk, who took out a tough Spaniard already in Sara Sorribes Tormo. Kostyuk is capable of the upset here but a little unlucky all the same to draw perhaps the most in-form player on tour right now, with Badosa to win outright a suitably cautious pick.
