THE PREDICTION

World number 10 Marketa Vondrousova has seriously impressed this week in Cincinnati after snapping her nine-match winning streak, stretching back to her Wimbledon glory last month, against Coco Gauff at this stage of last week’s Canada Masters. The 24-year-old has beaten two strong foes in Katerina Siniakova and Anastasia Potapova to steady the ship in Cincinnati but she will face a totally different prospect in former world number three Sloane Stephens, who upset defending champion Caroline Garcia to back up a solid opener. World number 38 Stephens won the US Open in 2017 and then the Miami Open a year later to prove her credentials on US hardcourts but, like Vondrousova, she is probably at her most comfortable on clay with both players finishing runner-up at Roland-Garros in successive years – Stephens to Simona Halep in 2018 and Vondrousova to Ash Barty in 2019.

The pair have never met on tour to make this a fascinating, potentially thrilling, clash on Thursday but Vondrousova has to be favoured with her insatiable recent form. Take the Czech to edge through.
