THE PREDICTION
Former world number three Marin Cilic beat Maximilian Marterer in straight sets on Tuesday to get a promising US Open campaign underway. The 33-year-old win his only Grand Slam title here back in 2014, stunning Roger Federer in the semi-finals, and after an incredible run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros back in June on his weakest surface he will be feeling confident of making the latter stages in New York. World number 42 Albert Ramos-Vinolas has also enjoyed some strong form this summer and he also came through the first round in straight sets against Norbert Gombos. The Spaniard beat David Goffin and Diego Schwartzman at the Canada Masters before taking eventual runner-up Hubert Hurkacz to a tight decider and he is a constant menace to have to cope with on any surface. Cilic leads this head-to-head record quite comfortably at 7-3, having won each of their last three meetings since 2019, including this season at the Madrid Open. Four sets is about as likely as three, so back the Croat to win outright.
