THE LOWDOWN
MARIE BOUZKOVA
World number 66 Marie Bouzkova is through to the round of 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time after beating a top grass-courter in Alison Riske on Friday. The 23-year-old stunned seventh-seed Danielle Collins in the first round, producing the kind of tennis she first displayed back in 2020 when she broke the top 50 before falling away in 2021. Bouzkova has finished runner-up in three WTA tour finals, including this season’s Guadalajara Open to Sloane Stephens.
CAROLINE GARCIA
Former world number four Caroline Garcia is demanding to be taken seriously at Wimbledon this season after an impressive victory over Shuai Zhang in two tiebreaks on Friday. The 28-year-old is vastly talented but often struggles to tie consistent performances together enough to rise back up the WTA rankings, where being seeded at tournaments would make her a huge threat. However, Garcia is currently in some searing form on grass, winning last week’s Bad Homburg Open for an eighth career WTA title and a now eight-match winning streak.
THE PREDICTION
This will be a totally different test for Caroline Garcia after taking out the likes of Emma Raducanu and Shuai Zhang. Tall, powerful Czech Marie Bouzkova is on the run of her young career so far and she looks dangerous after stunning Danielle Collins and Alison Riske so far. The 23-year-old beat Garcia in straight sets on grass at last season’s Birmingham Classic but Garcia’s results have been up and down her entire career. The Frenchwoman, at her current best, is a creditable title-contender at SW19 and backing her to edge this outright seems a reasonable risk. The suitably cautious pick, though, is for Garcia to win at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
