World number eight Maria Sakkari dropped the first set against Sorana Cirstea before fighting back on Wednesday in a totally predictable result. The 28-year-old often struggles with imposing herself on a match, let alone a tournament, until backed against a wall but she also often improves in her next match after a scare. This should be a thrilling battle on Thursday with world number 17 Karolina Muchova looking like coming back into the form that took her to a first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros in June. The 26-year-old has needed three sets apiece to come through two tough foes in Beatriz Haddad-Maia and Petra Martic to suggest this match should need a decider but Muchova has beaten Sakkari in each of their last three meetings to lead 3-1 in their head-to-head and only one of their four encounters has seen three. Four of their last seven sets have gone to a tiebreak, though, to make taking Muchova to earn at least a set and for at least one tiebreak in the match look a shrewd way to avoid the result.
